Seasonal Affective Disorder and Sleeping Issues

January 20, 2012 | No Comment |

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a condition that affects people during the winter months. It is a condition where one feels very depressed and may also be unable to sleep properly. According to a US based study every six out of one hundred people suffer from this disorder.

Seasonal Affective Disorder and Sleep

This disorder usually affects people in late fall and winter months. The days progressively become shorter in those months. Sun rises later in the day and sets early. The further from the equator a person is the darker the days are. People leave for work in dark and when they return it’s dark again. Some days due to weather conditions, the sun does not appear at all. This leads to the onset of SAD which is more severe during the coldest and darkest months of the year. Some of the common symptoms are pessimistic thoughts which in their extreme form could lead one to think of suicide, sad feelings, lack of energy, reduced or no sleep for some, reduced sex drive, loss of interest in fun activities in general, tendency to be irritable and restless, lack of concentration and overeating, which usually leads to weight gain and associated emotional and physical problems.

SAD and sleep disorders go hand in hand. It is difficult to determine what might occur first. It usually varies from person to person. In some cases lack of sleep may give way to SAD or it could be vice versa. The person experiencing these issues may remain in bed for a very long time but will not be able to have a good sleep. This lack of sleep leads to tiredness and inability to focus on the daily tasks.

SAD and insomnia quite often are linked to depression and feelings of sadness. Again hard to pinpoint what might occur first but one condition quite frequently occurs in conjunction with the other. Research has shown that risk of insomnia increases the risk of depression ten times and those who are depressed are at a high risk of having trouble sleeping, remaining asleep for a sufficient amount of time and/or having a good sleep. Depression also is a cause for some breathing problems. According to a reputable US based research, depression increases the risk of respiratory issues five times. During the study depressed people were found to be at a five times higher risk of developing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a form of sleep breathing disorder as compared to their non depressive counterparts.

Suffering from depression and insomnia for four to six months in a year is a very long time to not be your normal self. If you suffer from such symptoms and they seem to hinder you from doing your daily work then it is a good idea to consult your physician or a sleep disorder specialist. There are a variety of helpful treatment options available which might be worth considering.
